That is exactly where I found myself.
After more than 30 years working in software engineering and technology, I started asking questions that I could not easily answer.
- What do I want my retirement to look like?
- How much will it really cost?
- How do I stay healthy and active?
- What experiences do I want to have?
And perhaps most importantly, how do I make sure I am not simply retiring from work, but retiring into a life filled with purpose?
What I have discovered
The more I searched for answers, the more I realised that most retirement advice focuses on one thing: money.
Finances are incredibly important, and GoodLifeBetter will provide practical tools to help people understand and plan that side of their future.
But money is only one piece of the jigsaw.
A good retirement is also about having the freedom to enjoy life, protecting your health, strengthening relationships, exploring new places, finding purpose and making the most of your time.
It might mean:
- Looking after your health and wellbeing.
- Spending more time with the people who matter most.
- Exploring new places and experiences.
- Finding purpose through hobbies, volunteering or new projects.
- Making every day meaningful.
Ultimately, it is about intentionally building a life you will actually look forward to living.
Why I created GoodLifeBetter
GoodLifeBetter grew out of my own attempt to answer these questions.
I am not writing this from the other side of retirement with a finished blueprint.
I am still on the journey too.
I am building my own retirement lifestyle plan while developing GoodLifeBetter in real time, sharing what I learn, the ideas I discover and the practical tools I build and use myself.
As a technology professional, my instinct has always been to solve problems by building practical solutions.
When I couldn’t find some of the retirement planning tools I wanted, I decided to start creating them myself.
And that has grown into something much bigger.
What you can expect from GoodLifeBetter
Over the coming months and years, I want GoodLifeBetter to become a useful resource for anyone thinking seriously about the next chapter of their life.
Together we’ll explore how to:
Retire Better. Live Better. Travel Better. Move Better. Plan Better.
I’ll share practical guides, useful tools, new applications, ideas, experiences and lessons from the journey.
Some things will be about planning.
Others will simply be about enjoying life more.
There will be free tools to try, practical guides to use and new ideas to explore.
And as GoodLifeBetter develops, subscribers like you will be among the first to hear about what we’re building next.
Building something together
I don’t want GoodLifeBetter to become another website telling people what the perfect retirement looks like.
There isn’t one.
Your version of a good life may look completely different from mine.
Instead, I want to build a community of people who are thinking ahead, trying things, sharing experiences and intentionally creating the future they want.
Whether you’re in your thirties thinking ahead, your forties beginning to plan, your fifties preparing for change or already enjoying retirement, you’re welcome here.
Because I believe something quite simple:
The best chapters of life don’t have to be behind us.
They may still be waiting to be written.
Thank you for joining me at the beginning of GoodLifeBetter.
I hope you’ll follow the journey, try the things we build and perhaps share some of your own experiences along the way.
Because retirement isn’t the finish line.
It’s the beginning of a new chapter.
And together, we can build that chapter intentionally.
